UN envoy meets Sudanese military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in push for peace
Lamamra, serving as the Personal Representative of Secretary-General António Guterres, delivered a special message to General Abdel Fattah outlining the United Nations’ position and its continued commitment to supporting Sudan.
In a bid to calm the escalating conflict in Sudan, United Nations envoy Ramtane Lamamra held talks on Wednesday with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, in the coastal city of Port Sudan.
The meeting formed part of Lamamra’s wider initiative to support peace negotiations and encourage dialogue among the country’s warring factions.

Lamamra, serving as the Personal Representative of Secretary-General António Guterres, delivered a special message to General Abdel Fattah outlining the United Nations’ position and its continued commitment to supporting Sudan. The Transitional Sovereign Council later issued a statement confirming the meeting and the message’s contents.
Earlier, from New York, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that Lamamra was engaging in consultations with various stakeholders in Sudan. These discussions are intended to identify ways to reinforce civilian protection and reduce the persistent violence plaguing the nation.
“In his engagements, the Personal Envoy will reaffirm our call for urgent and genuine dialogue between the parties to the conflict towards an immediate cessation of hostilities,” said Dujarric.
He also reiterated the UN’s ongoing appeal for a political solution that includes all relevant voices, warning that further violence risks plunging the country deeper into instability. He noted that indirect discussions might be explored to bring the opposing sides closer to negotiations.
During the Port Sudan meeting, which was also attended by the Acting Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Idris Ismail, General Burhan expressed Sudan’s appreciation for the UN's involvement. He assured Lamamra of Sudan's cooperation in the pursuit of peace and in alleviating the humanitarian crisis by ensuring access to those in urgent need.
Ambassador Idris, also quoted in the statement, noted that the military leadership remained committed to supporting UN efforts to reach affected communities.
Following the talks, Lamamra described his conversation with General Abdel Fattah as informative and constructive. He said the responses received were “clear answers” and confirmed that he would brief Secretary-General Guterres and members of the UN Security Council.
“The United Nations will continue to fulfil its responsibilities in providing humanitarian support and pursuing the peaceful solution so urgently needed,” Lamamra emphasised.
